Got up before the birds shat on the ground to go out and stand in the cold for two hours. Translation: stood for two hours in the morning rush at Northwick park tube station and jotted down passenger details.

I am sure there was a whole lot of other things I was supposed to write here for today, but I cannot remember what.

I decided to go into uni and update/reinstall my machine, because I wanted to have two root partitions on it. One for experiments (such as moving to devfs) and general bloat (to impress friends — they generally won’t be impressed by e.g. the blackbox window manager that is my preferred choice) such as kde/gnome etc. etc.

I had a lot of trouble getting online; pump didn’t have any problem obtaining an IP, but I simply could not connect to anywhere. I could not even ping the dhcp-server, nor, did I later discover, the IP it gave me! Something was fishy indeed.

I eventually tracked down the problem; the network address given to me was wrong, so either the University DHCP-server gave me the wrong network address — or the version of pump I was using that calculated the wrong one. Anyway, by using a static IP (using most of the info from pump) I was soon online and started updating things.

During all the updating and moving data back and forth I slipped and accidentally deleted much of my home directory. Ouch. Earlier, I had just realised that I had deleted my CVS repository. Double ouch. I think the time is ripe for a backup-strategy. Down the maelstrom went the sources for my web page, but since I have presented a small example of how my sources look like on the web and, more importantly, the macro-file used to make xhtml out of it was there as well, it was all recovered within an hour.

Today we have no hot water. This is starting to get out of hand; everything is breaking down on us. It was almost laughable for a while, as if it was something that had to be expected in a student house, but now it is just really, really tedious. It seems every week there’s something new that breaks. This week it is the hot water, and during the windy last week the TV-areal on the roof collapsed.

Slight update of my page as well today, apart from the diary. Nothing much, just removing the AI page for the time being–it was desperately lacking in content and I don’t have time to fix it. It might turn up again later, when I’ve had time to fix it.

My mom sent me an exerpt from the local newspaper, featuring an interview with a girl from my hometown who forms half a pop duo called HoneyTrap. Good luck to them :)

It’s a small world. Whilst surfing by the official Blade 2 website, I saw this picture. What is special about it is that the girl in the upper left corner went to the same school as me. More specifically, she was in my class for three years :) It’s a small world indeed.

Today I went to see Monster Inc. It was a really good movie, and it had an absolutely adorable pre-showing called “For the Birds” or something similar. That one alone was almost worth the money ;)

Today I had the first lecture of the new Artificial Life and Computer Games module I am taking. It looks very interesting, although I have to learn some graphics programming and probably very soon as well. Don’t know whether I will go for s-lang or curses or something else yet. Oh well, I guess it will be alright in the end :)

Small cosmetic changes to a few of these pages, in addition to uploading the latest versions of some of my configuration files. The .procmailrc file in particular should be worth a look now. It has a quite powerful spam detection functionality using conditional scoring.

GLLUG meeting again, this time the venue was held at the University of Westminster, Cavendish Campus. Very interesting talk about UML by Steve Lau and Tushar Joshi. Went to the Green Man (Great Portland St.) afterwords and had a very good time.

Had a (small) house party. Nothing got broken and Dave tidied a bit the morning after; altogether a formidable success (apart from the low turnout that is…).
